Evaluation of a multi-modal intervention program for the treatment
of
children with ADHD. The purpose of the research investigation
is to
evaluate the effectiveness of the program for children
in the early phases
of ADHD. The intervention is revolutionary because it acknowledges
the
roles of sensory processing and output, as well as the utility
of speech and
language instruction for targeting ADHD symptoms; in addition,
it
conceptualizes ADHD as developmentally disabling and functionally
limiting to the children affected by it. The project aims
to evaluate the
program's effectiveness in two ways: first, to compare
individual post-test
and follow-up functioning to pre-test measures of ADHD symptoms,
parent
skills, social skills, sensory and speech and language deficits;
and second,
to compare the children treated in the multi-modal intervention
to a sample
of ADHD children treated with traditional parent and teacher
behavior
modification techniques as well as to a sample of children treated
with
psychostimulant medication. A relatively long-term follow-up
(18 months)
component will be added, in order to evaluate maintenance of
any
treatment effects over time. The goal of the project is
to demonstrate the
utility of incorporating sensory integration and speech and language
therapies, strategies that heretofore have rarely been employed
with
ADHD children, with other modality-specific treatments of the
disorder, in
hope of better symptom improvement and longer term maintenance
of
treatment effects.
