GRANTS RECEIVED

Forehand, R., & Wierson, M. (January, 1992; Funded by the Centers for Disease
Control, Atlanta, Georgia and The National Hemophilia Foundation, New
York, New York.)  Correlates of Family Functioning.  Investigated individual
and family functioning in families with an HIV seropositive father, with a
particular focus on the relationship between psychosocial variables and both
medical compliance and high-risk sexual behavior.  Data collection was
conducted over a two-year period in eight Hemophilia Treatment Centers
 across the United States.

Wierson, M., and Banis, H. (March, 1993; funded by the Hewlett Foundation).
Governmental HIV/AIDS policy: The Gap between implementation and
effectiveness in the lives of children and adolescents.  This grant was a study
of the impact of governmental policy upon the HIV/AIDS awareness of
children and adolescents.  International policy comparison was conducted
with Sweden, Zimbabwe, and the United States.

Wierson, M. (On behalf of the Pomona College Women's Studies Program; May,
1994; funded by the Ford Foundation).  Development of an Internship
Component for Pomona College Women's Studies Program.  Implemented in
collaboration with Lourdes Arguelles, Ph.D., Phyllis Jackson, Ph.D., Ann
Stromberg, Ph.D. and Eva Valle, Ph.D.  The Teaching Development project
resulted in course entitled "Feminist Community Engagement," which is now a
required course for all Women's Studies majors.

Wierson, M. (April, 1996; funded by Casa Colina Foundation).  SUPERKIDS!
Evaluation of a multi-modal intervention program for the treatment of
children with ADHD.  The purpose of the research investigation is to
evaluate the effectiveness of the  program for children in the early phases
of ADHD.  The intervention is revolutionary because it acknowledges the
roles of sensory processing and output, as well as the utility of speech and
language instruction for targeting ADHD symptoms; in addition, it
conceptualizes ADHD as developmentally disabling and functionally
limiting to the children affected by it.  The project aims to evaluate the
program's effectiveness in two ways:  first, to compare individual post-test
and follow-up functioning to pre-test measures of ADHD symptoms, parent
skills, social skills, sensory and speech and language deficits; and second,
to compare the children treated in the multi-modal intervention to a sample
of ADHD children treated with traditional parent and teacher behavior
modification techniques as well as to a sample of children treated with
 psychostimulant medication.  A relatively long-term follow-up (18 months)
component will be added, in order to evaluate maintenance of any
treatment effects over time.  The goal of the project is to demonstrate the
utility of incorporating sensory integration and speech and language
therapies, strategies that heretofore have rarely been employed with
ADHD children, with other modality-specific treatments of the disorder, in
hope of better symptom improvement and longer term maintenance of
 treatment effects.
